Housing
Glass aquariums and plastic cages vertically oriented of appropriate size work well for crested geckos. These geckos are aboreal and the need height rather then floor space. A 10 gallon aquarium stood up on end with a secure lid works well for a single adult crested gecko. Making sure the tank is escape proof is essential. If you prefer to use plastic tubs in a rack system, care must be taken when sliding the tubs in and out. Ventilation holes should be drilled into the container to allow for proper aeration.
Crested geckos can be cohabitated, but close attention should be made to monitor for any aggression. More then one male should not be housed in the same enclosure to avoid fighting.
Crested Geckos need plenty of hideing space. Standard toilet paper or paper towel rolls and pvc pipe work well. Artificial or live plants also can provide adequate cover coupled with branches and vines sturdy enough to hold the weight of a gecko. Realistic hides can be found at a local pet store. We recommend that hide items chosen are easy to clean and disinfect. Keeping the dishes, substrate, and enclosure clean will insure that your gecko stays happy and healthy.
Recommended substrates include Spagnum Moss, Organic Soil, Cypress Mulch, Newspaper and Paper Towels. Avoid cedar shavings, cedar chips and sand.
Temperature
Like all reptiles, crested geckos rely on thermoregulation to control their body temperature. Since they cannot produce their own body heat, you must supply them with an environment for them to regulate their own body temperatures. Access to warms areas or a basking spot is very important to your gecko’s health. To maintain health, geckos must be kept at 72-78 F, using the higher temperatures to digest their food. A commonly used method is using an under tank heater on one side of the tank. UTH’s usually are adhesive on one side so that they may be stuck directly to the tank. Flexwatt heat tape is another option to provide belly heat. With any heating device, a thermostat to control the temperature is a must. A digital thermometer is also essential to accurately monitor temperatures.
TME Feeding Recipe
- 1 tbs crested gecko diet
- 2 tbs fruit baby food (pear, banana or mango)
- 1/4 tsp multi vitamin
- Add water to reach appropriate consistancy (think applesauce)
This mix can last up to a week if refridgerated. A crested gecko will eat 1/4 – 1 tsp of the mixture a night. Some have a particular taste for certain flavors, so watch and see which type your gecko loves!
